Bay Area Cleaning Guide

How Long Does Deep Cleaning Take? A Bay Area Guide by Home Size

How long does deep cleaning take? A professional deep cleaning usually takes somewhere between 3 and 20+ total cleaner-hours, depending on the size of the home, how much buildup there is, and what’s included. A lightly used studio sits at the low end. A five-bedroom house that hasn’t been cleaned in months sits at the high end.

How long the cleaners are actually inside your home is a separate number. It depends on how many cleaners are working. One cleaner doing a six-hour job is in your home for about six hours. Two cleaners splitting the same job may finish in roughly three.

This guide gives estimated deep-cleaning times by home size, shows how the one-cleaner and two-cleaner math works, and covers the Bay Area access and household factors that change appointment length. Every range here is a planning estimate, not a guaranteed completion time.

The Baseline

How Long Does Deep Cleaning Take on Average?

There’s no single average that fits every home. Published estimates vary because companies define “deep cleaning” differently and don’t always say whether they’re counting one person’s time or a whole crew’s.

For national context, Angi estimates that deep cleaning a house can take roughly four to 10 hours, with smaller, well-kept homes at the shorter end and large homes taking 10 hours or more. Angi puts a 1,000–2,000 sq ft home at around six to eight hours. It doesn’t specify how many cleaners those figures assume, so treat them as a general range rather than an appointment length.

Two numbers to know

Total cleaner-hours: all the cleaning labor the job needs, added up across every cleaner. One cleaner working one hour = one cleaner-hour.

Appointment time: how long the cleaners are inside your home, from start to finish. With one cleaner the two numbers are about the same; with two cleaners, appointment time can be close to half the cleaner-hours.

Two service terms

Deep cleaning: a detailed clean that targets buildup routine visits leave behind, such as grease, soap scum, grout, baseboards, trim and fixtures.

Standard cleaning: routine upkeep for a home that’s already reasonably maintained.

By Home Size

Deep Cleaning Time by Home Size

The table below is an illustrative planning model. It is not a measured Bay Area average and not a Bay Area Best Maids completion standard.

Home size Estimated total cleaner-hours Approx. time on site, 1 cleaner Approx. time on site, 2 cleaners*
Studio / 1 bedroom (up to 800 sq ft) 3–5 3–5 hours 1.5–2.5 hours
2 bedrooms (801–1,200 sq ft) 4–7 4–7 hours 2–3.5 hours
3 bedrooms (1,201–2,000 sq ft) 6–10 6–10 hours 3–5 hours
4 bedrooms (2,001–3,000 sq ft) 8–14 8–14 hours 4–7 hours
5+ bedrooms (over 3,000 sq ft) 12–20+ 12–20+ hours 6–10+ hours

*Two-cleaner times assume the work divides evenly. They exclude setup, building access, coordination between cleaners, and tasks that can’t be split. Smaller homes don’t always speed up in proportion, because two people can’t scrub the same small bathroom at once.

How these estimates were built. These ranges were synthesized from published guidance on residential deep-cleaning time, then converted between cleaner-hours and on-site time using simple division. They assume reasonably accessible rooms, a conventional residential deep-cleaning scope, and no extreme dirt or debris. They are not based on Bay Area Best Maids job records. Your own quote is the number that applies to your home. Last updated: November 2026.

Studios and 1-bedroom apartments

Usually the quickest deep clean, but not always quick. A compact kitchen with years of cooking grease or a bathroom with heavy soap scum can push a small unit toward the top of its range, or past it. Size sets the baseline; condition decides where you land.

2-bedroom homes

Bathroom count matters more here than the extra bedroom. A two-bedroom with two full bathrooms has twice the tile, glass, grout and fixtures of a one-bath unit, and that detail work is where deep-cleaning time accumulates.

3-bedroom homes

At this size, layout starts to show. A three-bedroom flat on one floor moves faster than a three-level townhome where supplies have to travel up and down stairs. Expect most of a working day if one cleaner handles the whole job.

4 bedrooms and larger

Larger homes typically add more bathrooms, more living space and more stairs. A full deep clean of a 3,000+ sq ft home with one cleaner can run longer than a single workday. Two cleaners, or splitting the work across visits, is often the practical way to plan it.

Want a number for your home instead of a range? Share your bedrooms, bathrooms, square footage and condition, and your quote will show the scope and price before you book.

Staffing

One Cleaner vs. Two Cleaners: How Staffing Changes Your Appointment

Adding a cleaner shortens how long the job takes in your home. It doesn’t make the job smaller.

Take a deep clean that needs six cleaner-hours of work:

Cleaners Hours each Total cleaner-hours Approx. time on site
1 6 6 About 6 hours
2 3 6 About 3 hours, often a little more

Illustrative example only, not a quote or a scheduling commitment.

Why “a little more”? Two cleaners spend some time coordinating, waiting on each other in tight spaces, and sharing equipment. In a small apartment, a second cleaner may not cut the time in half.

What this means if you book hourly. Bay Area Best Maids bills hourly cleaning per hour, per cleaner. Two cleaners for three hours is six cleaner-hours of labor, not three. The pricing page explains how hourly and flat-rate cleaning are calculated.

When fewer hours on site is worth it. A shorter appointment helps if you’re working from home, coordinating a building access window, or need the home finished before guests or a move. If none of that applies, one cleaner over a longer visit covers the same amount of work.

Time Drivers

What Makes a Deep Clean Take Longer?

Square footage is a starting point, not a prediction. A small apartment with heavy kitchen and bathroom buildup can take more labor than a larger home that’s cleaned regularly.

Factor Why it adds time
Bathrooms Showers, tile, grout, glass, mirrors and fixtures need detailed work, especially with soap scum or mineral residue.
Kitchen condition Grease on backsplashes, stovetops and range hoods, plus food residue, takes longer to remove than light dust.
Overall condition A home that hasn’t been cleaned in months needs more passes on the same surfaces than one that’s maintained.
Add-ons Oven interiors, refrigerator interiors, interior cabinets and interior windows are separate tasks with their own time.
Pets Pet hair on floors, upholstery and baseboards adds vacuuming and detail time.
Clutter and furniture Cleaners can only clean surfaces they can reach. Moving items or tidying first eats into cleaning time.
Layout, floors and stairs Multiple levels, stairs, and delicate surfaces such as natural stone or older finishes need more time and care.
Building access Check-in, elevators, entry codes and parking affect when cleaning can start, not how long the cleaning itself takes.
Number of cleaners Changes how long the job takes in your home, not how much work it needs.

Which tasks usually take the longest? Bathrooms with soap scum and grout buildup, and kitchens with built-up grease. Appliance interiors, when added, are also among the more time-intensive individual tasks.

There’s no reliable universal rule such as “clutter doubles the time” or “each bathroom adds 45 minutes.” The effect depends on the specific home, which is why accurate details on your quote request matter more than any rule of thumb.

Compare

Deep Cleaning vs. Standard and Move-Out Cleaning Time

For the same home, a deep clean takes longer than a standard cleaning because it covers more: detailed baseboards and trim, grout, fixtures, and areas routine visits move past quickly.

Service Typical home Time compared with a standard clean of the same home
Standard cleaning Maintained, occupied home Baseline
Deep cleaning Occupied home with buildup, or a first professional clean Longer: more detail work on the same rooms
Move-out cleaning Empty home before handover Varies: no furniture to work around, but adds full interior cabinets, drawers and closets

At Bay Area Best Maids, move-out cleaning is billed hourly, with a time estimate in each quote. For a full breakdown of scope, see deep cleaning vs. standard cleaning in the Bay Area.

Local Logistics

Bay Area Factors That Affect Scheduling

Most of what makes a Bay Area deep clean longer or shorter is the home itself. A few local conditions affect logistics and specific tasks. Whether any of them apply depends on your building and address, not your city.

San Francisco: building access and parking

In apartment and condo buildings, check-in, concierge procedures, elevator reservations and building rules can affect when cleaning starts. Walk-up stairs mean supplies and equipment are carried up by hand.

Street parking also plays a part. San Francisco’s curb zones are marked by signs and curb paint that set the hours, time limit and type of use, and many loading and short-term spaces allow only a few minutes. Sharing your best parking or loading option ahead of time helps the visit start on schedule.

Oakland and Berkeley: stairs and detailed interiors

Multi-level homes, duplexes and walk-up apartments add stair time. Homes with decorative trim, molding or older finishes may need gentler methods and more detail time. Neither applies to every home in either city, so mention them only if they describe yours.

San Jose and the South Bay: mineral residue

Hard water leaves white mineral deposits on showerheads, faucets and glass shower doors, and heavy deposits take longer to remove. How hard your water is depends on its source. San Jose Water reports hardness of roughly 11–26 grains per gallon for its groundwater supply and 4–9 grains for imported surface water, and treats water above 7 grains per gallon as hard. Mineral buildup that has etched into glass or stone may not come off fully with cleaning.

San Mateo and the Peninsula: condos and multi-level homes

Condo buildings may require access instructions or check-in, and multi-level houses add stair time and more bathrooms. Appliance add-ons are common requests for these homes and should be listed when you request a quote.

Before the Visit

How to Prepare Your Home for a Deep Cleaning

You don’t need to pre-clean. Preparation is about letting the cleaner spend the booked time cleaning, not moving things or waiting at the door.

  1. Clear clutter from surfaces. Pick up personal items from floors, counters and tables so every surface can be reached.
  2. Empty the fridge if you added that task. Refrigerator interior cleaning needs an empty fridge.
  3. Arrange access. Share how the cleaner gets in: lockbox, spare key, concierge or building code. You don’t have to be home.
  4. Send building and parking notes. Buzzer codes, elevator reservations, stairs and parking tips help the visit start on time.
  5. Flag priorities and delicate surfaces. Point out natural stone, antique finishes, or the rooms that matter most.
  6. Plan for pets. Let us know who lives with you, and keep anxious pets in a closed room.
  7. Mention any deadline. If you need the home finished by a certain time, say so when you book.

Booking

How Much Time Should You Book?

That depends on how you’re paying, because flat-rate and hourly cleaning handle time differently.

  Flat-rate deep cleaning Hourly cleaning
What you’re buying The full deep-cleaning checklist A set number of cleaner-hours
If the job runs long The price doesn’t change with time Work stops at the booked time
What gets done Everything on the checklist for your service Your ranked priorities, as time allows
Satisfaction guarantee Yes (flat-rate cleaning only) Not covered
Best fit Whole-home deep cleans and first-time cleans Specific rooms or targeted areas

With flat-rate deep cleaning, you don’t choose a number of hours. The price is set from your home size and service type and covers the checklist however long it takes. Your quote may include an estimated time window. Treat it as an estimate, not a fixed promise.

With hourly cleaning, book generously. Extra time beyond what you booked depends on the schedule and isn’t guaranteed, and minimum hours may apply. A heavily soiled home can use up an hourly booking on one or two rooms, which is why heavy buildup usually calls for a deep clean rather than hourly service.

If your home has heavy buildup or hasn’t been professionally cleaned in a while, describe it in the special instructions field when you request a quote. If the home turns out to differ from what was described, ask how that change is handled before your booking is final.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Deep-Cleaning Time

How long does it take to deep clean a one-bedroom apartment?

+

Using our illustrative estimates, a studio or one-bedroom up to about 800 sq ft needs roughly 3–5 cleaner-hours. With one cleaner, that’s about 3–5 hours in your home. Heavy kitchen or bathroom buildup can push it higher.

How many hours does it take to deep clean a 2- or 3-bedroom home?

+

Roughly 4–7 cleaner-hours for a two-bedroom (801–1,200 sq ft) and 6–10 for a three-bedroom (1,201–2,000 sq ft). Bathroom count, condition and add-ons move the number more than bedroom count does.

Does a deep clean take all day?

+

For larger homes with one cleaner, it can. A three-bedroom may take most of a working day, and 3,000+ sq ft homes can run longer. Smaller apartments usually take a few hours. A second cleaner shortens the time in your home.

Can cleaners deep clean a home in three hours?

+

Sometimes. A lightly used studio or one-bedroom may fit in about three hours with one cleaner. A typical two-bedroom may fit in roughly 2–3.5 hours with two cleaners. Larger homes or heavy buildup generally won’t.

How many cleaners do I need for a deep clean?

+

The number of cleaners changes how long the job takes in your home, not how much work it needs. Your quote states how many cleaners are assigned. If you need the job done within a tight window, mention it when you book.

How much longer does deep cleaning take than regular cleaning?

+

A deep clean takes longer than a standard clean of the same home, but there’s no fixed percentage. The gap is widest in homes with heavy buildup, because that’s the work a deep clean adds.

Does clutter make deep cleaning take longer?

+

Yes. Cleaners can only clean surfaces they can reach, so time spent moving items or tidying comes out of cleaning time. Clearing floors and counters beforehand helps.

Will the cleaner finish within the time I booked?

+

With flat-rate deep cleaning, the checklist is completed for the quoted price, and any time estimate is an estimate rather than a promise. With hourly cleaning, work stops at the booked time and covers your priorities in order. Extra time isn’t guaranteed.

Do I need to be home during the deep clean?

+

Not necessarily. Many customers arrange access through a lockbox, spare key, concierge or building code. Share access instructions when you book.

A deep clean’s length comes down to three things: how much work your home needs, how many cleaners share it, and what’s included. If you’d rather have a number for your own home, request a deep-cleaning quote or read more about Bay Area Best Maids deep cleaning.
